Speaker Appoints Rep. Truitt to Interim Committee on School Health
AUSTIN -- House Speaker Tom Craddick, R-Midland, has appointed Rep. Vicki Truitt, R-Keller, to serve on an interim joint committee to consider nutrition and health in public schools. He expressed confidence in Truitt and what she has to offer to the committee.
“Rep. Truitt’s health background and strong work ethic have made her a knowledgeable and valued member of the Legislature,” Speaker Craddick said. “I fully expect that she will continue to produce the same quality work as she did while serving on other health-related committees during this past session.”
During the 78th Regular Legislative Session, Craddick appointed Truitt to three committees: the House Committees on Public Health, where she was chairman of Budget and Oversight, the Select Committee on State Health Care Expenditures and Appropriations where she served on the subcommittee on Health and Human Services.
Truitt was pleased with this fourth appointment by the speaker. “I am honored that the speaker appointed me to explore this issue. There is no doubt that there is a problem with obesity in Texas children,” Truitt said.
“I look forward to working with the other members of the committee as we seek to improve the health of Texas children.”
The joint committee, which was established through the passage
of Senate Bill 474 during the 78th Regular Legislative Session, will be
comprised of certain state officials, members of the Legislature and private
citizens.
It will review nutrition and health in public schools and submit a report
with findings and recommendations, if funds are available. Committee members
appointed by Craddick will begin their terms on Sept. 1, and will serve
at the speaker’s discretion.
Much of the Legislature’s work and research for upcoming sessions
is done during interim periods. In addition to accumulating data, legislators
are also afforded the opportunity to meet with constituents both in the
Capitol as well as the district offices regarding matters that will be
addressed for possible legislation.
